It's great to get outside with your kids and have fun! The sunshine is the best source for Vitamin D and it definitely lifts spirits... but unfortunately it can also be dangerous.
Without getting too scientific, the sun emits ultraviolet rays (UV), these UV rays enter the cells of the skin. Excessive sun exposure otherwise known as getting a nasty pink burn (we have all been there) or prolonged periods in the sun without protection can cause damage to the DNA in the cells. When these cells then replicate they can become mutated or have abnormal growth, such as cancer.
So the next time you and your kids are running in and out of waves on the beach or going on a Sunday family walk remember to pack some of these products to protect their delicate skin from harmful UV rays.
1. Reef Safe Suncream
The one thing you should always be doing to protect your skin from UV rays is applying suncream. Suncream is made up of a mix of chemicals which block the ultraviolet rays from penetrating your skin. Unfortunately these chemicals which are in most suncreams, are damaging to the delicate marine eco-system. That's why we recommend you use 'reef friendly' suncream. Suncream that has been created to not contain these nasty chemicals.
offer a good range of adult and kid 'reef friendly' suncreams. All Good suncreams are made from nano-zinc only which means they're biodegradable and non-damaging to sea life! Their suncream is sweat and water resistant, which is great because we all know the stress of trying to keep the kids out of the water after applying their suncream!
2. Face suncream
You might think that running around after your kids is the main cause of premature ageing, but sun-damage is actually the biggest culprit when it comes to signs of skin ageing! When UV rays penetrate the skin they can also damage the elastic fibres which keep our skin firm, causing dreaded wrinkles. This is why it is particularly important to keep both your face and your kids faces protected from UV rays. Starting young is essential!
It's great to see that big companies are recognising the importance of 'reef friendly' suncream. Skincare experts, REN have released a mineral SPF 30 face suncream
, clear of any chemical UV filters. It's also vegan and cruelty free.
3. Polarised Sunglasses for kids
Unfortunately UV damage doesn't just stop there, it can also damage your eyes. Extended exposure to UV has been linked to several significant eye problems. Don't panic though - wearing good quality sunglasses can protect your kids eyes. It's just worth being careful. Especially with children's eyes as they're much more susceptible to damage.
