We don’t know about you, but our kids are obsessed with toys, playing games, and having fun! Unfortunately, lots of toys tend to be made of plastic and other materials that would not be considered as ‘eco-friendly’. What happens to plastic toys, dolls and stuffed animals when your kids grow up? We bet a large amount ends up in Landfill. Not to mention that we often do not know where our toys are made which means we can’t be sure that the people who are making them are being paid a fair wage. Fortunately, there are plenty of options out there that are both made from sustainable materials, ethically made, and are fun to play with!
For those who despair at flimsy plastic toys, it’s good to know that there are other options out there. We have curated a list of some of our top sustainable toy picks for 2019. Raising your kids on sustainable toys can also be a great learning opportunity to learn about their planet and why it's important to take care of it.
GIANT BUBBLE KIT - Dr Zigs
What we love about this giant bubble kit is that it encourages the kids to get off the sofa or iPad and get outside in the fresh air! This brilliant giant bubble kit is made in the UK and the bubble mix is non-toxic and eco-friendly. It produces the most amazing giant bubbles! The wands are made with sustainably sourced wood with unbleached cotton ropes. It’s fun for kids of all ages - and I suppose us adults too!
FAIRTRADE DINOSAUR SET - Weaving Hope
At LB Swim, we are proud to be able to source each of our swimsuits, bikinis and rash vests directly back to the fairly paid factory worker who made them. After going through this process, we find ourselves consciously questioning who made our children’s toys and asking the right questions: who made this, were they paid fairly, do they get treated well by their employer. Unfortunately for a lot of products - toys or not - this is not questions that we will find the answers to. However, this Dinosaur set is from Weaving Hope, a company whose ensures their products are handmade by members of the World Fair Trade Organisation. All their products are handmade by women in Sri Lanka. This Dinosaur set was woven on traditional wooden handlooms, using organic cotton.
It’s also a really great toy to bring away with you on holiday because once the kids are done playing, you can simply zip up the pouch and it’s all tidy and ready to take on the move! Don’t worry if it gets grubby, the dinosaur set can be washed at 30 degrees in your washing machine.
DEVELOPMENTAL BEAR - Wild and Wolf Petit Collage
This adorable little bear is the perfect developmental soft toy for young children. The bright colours are created with non-toxic eco-friendly dyes. The outer material is made from 100% organic cotton and is filled with certified polyester made from recycled water bottles. Our swimwear is made using recycled ocean plastic so anything made using regenerated plastic bottles gets a thumbs up from us!
ORGANIC MODELLING CLAY - Ailefo
I’m sure we all remember playing with brightly coloured Playdough growing up but most shop-bought play-doh is full of artificial ingredients and colourings. Make sure your kids don’t miss out on all the fun of moulding by choosing organic play-doh instead. This organic modelling clay by Ailefo doesn’t contain any perfumes or parabens and the different colours are created with plant dyes. Their packaging is also environmentally friendly. You could also try making your own!
DOLLS HOUSE - Plan Toys
Our girls love their dolls house. Newer dolls houses are usually made with so much unnecessary plastic! However, this beautifully simple dolls house provides an open canvas for kids imagination whilst still being eco-friendly. The house is made in Thailand from sustainable plan wood, constructed with non-formaldehyde glue and is coloured with water-based non-toxic dyes (the whole process is carbon-neutral too!)
KNITTING KIT - Button Bag
We love a toy that also teaches kids new skills, and is good for concentration and mindfulness. This knitting kit is for older kids (8+) but what we love about it is that it teaches children how clothes are made! We’re very passionate at LB Swim that we should teach our kids where their clothes come from so that they can make more educated, sustainable and ethical buying decisions in the future.
Don’t panic mums and dads, you don’t have to know how to knit, this knitting kit is beginner proof. It comes with an instruction booklet, so you and your kids can learn a new skill together. We love that the needles are bamboo too, so you don’t have to worry about unnecessary plastic!
